Liverpool International Tennis Tournament

Local tennis stars took on some of the best international players at the 2006 Liverpool International Tennis Tournament.  Thousands packed in to Calderstones Park to watch some of the most famous faces of tennis battle it out at Liverpool's 6 day International tennis Tournament.

This tournament, now in its 5th year, saw local qualifiers battle it out with some of the biggest names in tennis, showcasing the tennis talent the region has to offer. Local aces included Gemma Bisson from Childwall and Allerton's Ken Skupski who was beaten in the semi final by Belgium number 2 Xavier Mailisse who went on to win the tournament.

Despite the changeable weather throughout the week, the crowds witnessed Pat Cash take on fellow
Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanisevic.

The crowds were also entertained by veteran tennis stars Mansour Bahrami, Ilie Nastase, Peter McNamara and Henri Leconte who showed they still had winning touches and a sense of humour as they joked in the Legends Doubles.

Barry Cowan, from Ormskirk, also took to the court on Saturday, challenging Pat Cash in a lighthearted match, which saw both players bantering with the crowd.

Rain stopped most of the play on Sunday with only enough dry spells to conclude the tournament final which saw Malisse win 3-6, 7-5, 14-12. The rain kept coming and referee Alan Mills was forced to abandon the remaining Legends games.
